One bundle of M26 apple rootstocks and a roll of grafting tape at the ready for a great forest school session. We’ll be doing some renovation pruning and traditional variety grafting of apples to grow new trees at the lovely Meynell Langley community orchard.
Fruit trees will grow from seed but they won’t produce the same variety as the parent plant- grafting produces cloned plants on a rootstock that’s stops them growing too big- meaning if you take a cutting from a Golden Delicious Apple you can guarantee you’ll get more of the same. Propagating like this keeps old varieties alive and lets more people taste more home grown fruit!
Red Devil apples are a particular favourite of the forest school group- I wonder how many of these trees will end up as Red Devils?
